Bridie O’Reilly’s Brunswick (Cnr Sydney Road and Brunswick Road) management have officially announced the closure of the pub, scheduled for Sunday 2nd April 2017. The pub was bought by developers in 2015. It’s unclear weather the facade of the classic Melbourne pub will remain in tact, and the pub, which was built in 1852 and originally named The Sarah Sands, is currently not heritage listed on the Walking Melbourne Website or the Victorian Heritage Database. Unfortunately, the pub is unlikely to see a revival similar to the likes of The Tote, however the venue has been home to a large number of bands and working musicians and is an icon nonetheless. I have been fortunate enough to play over 100 gigs at the venue over the past four and a half years with Stand & Deliver, and have enjoyed every moment! Let’s hope that we don’t lose too many more venues over the years. I’m personally still hoping for The Espy in St Kilda to re-open as a live music venue.
